Beatrice is a single mother.
Her husband passed away in 2000 due to sickness.
Her 4 younger children go to primary and the eldest goes to secondary school, but the second eldest does not go to secondary school because the family cannot afford the school fees.
Beatrice gets some food – mainly potatoes and ugali – from relatives’ farms, but only enough for the family to eat about 2 evenings a week.
Their house has 2 rooms and a kitchen, however this offers little protection. They use lamps for light and collect water from a river.
