Evaline is a married mother, whose husband earns a little money from working on a farm. However he doesn’t bring any of his wages back to the family but uses it all to supply his drinking habit. Moreover, Evaline suffers from domestic violence from her husband when he is drunk. Their children go to school, but Evaline struggles to pay the school fees. She produces some food such as potatoes and ugali on their farm and the family eats in the evenings. They live in a single room without a kitchen which offers little protection, and they get water from a well and use tin lamps for light.
