Alice is a married mother, whose husband earns a little money from working on a farm. However he doesn’t bring any of his wages back to the family but uses it all to supply his drinking habit. Moreover, Alice suffers from domestic violence from her husband when he is drunk. Their children go to primary school, but Alice struggles to pay the school fees. She gets potatoes and maize from neighbours’ farms so the family eat about 5 evenings a week. Their house – a single room and no kitchen – is not very well protected, and they get water from the well and use tin lamps for light.
