Helen is a married mother, whose husband earns a little money from working on a farm. However he doesn’t bring any of his wages back to the family but uses it all to supply his drinking habit. Moreover, Helen suffers from domestic violence from her husband.
Their children go to school, but Helen struggles to pay the school fees.
She produces some food, such as potatoes and maize, on their farm and the family eats about 4 evenings a week. They live in a house which has two rooms and a kitchen and offers little protection, getting water from a river and using tin lamps for light.
